The Legacy of Leaving Office

By: Vince Yanez

A friend of mine was reading one of my posts, where I compared Republicans to Democrats, and she asked me something I found intriguing. She said, “Have you ever noticed when a Democrat leaves office they continue doing things to help the country and the world, when a Republican leaves office, they just sort of disappear?” … Continue Reading

You Can’t Have It Both Ways

This is about the Constitution.

No, it’s not about the Tea Party carrying signs that say to Respect the Constitution and then screaming against a Democratically-Elected President. Nor is this about the GOP crying that we need to Honor the Constitution and then trying to re-interpret the 14th Amendment to get those babies born on American soil called non-citizens. Nor is this about those Patriots who scream for Freedom of Religion, unless it involves Islam, a Community Center near Ground Zero or a President who doesn’t wear his Christianity on his sleeve while he bombs innocent people into oblivion.

This is about the Donkey Party, you Democrats, who point at the tea party, the GOP, the ignorant, the haters and the racist and yell HYPOCRITES!

You are being hypocrites as well. … Continue Reading

Giving Til’ It Doesn’t Hurt

By: Vince Yanez

In Mort Rosenblum’s Escaping Plato’s Cave, he writes about a study where they ask Americans how much they think we contribute both in emergency relief and long-term aid to help other countries reduce poverty, develop, fight AIDS, etc. Americans guess we contribute anywhere from 10 to 15% of our GDP.   … Continue Reading

Some Battles Never End

By: Vince Yanez

It’s not about the WMD fairy tales, the Bush Administration lies, fake attempts to tie Saddam to the Taliban or the idiotic Mission Accomplished banner behind our Incompetent-in-Chief.

There are times for such things, but now is not one of them.

This week, the 4th Stryker Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division has left Iraq. They are officially the last combat brigade to leave following the 90,000 troops that have been exiting since President Obama took office, fulfilling his promise to put an end to what was happening in Iraq.

And now, thousands of men and women will return to their husbands and wives. Thousands of sons and daughters will return to their parents and thousands of children will see their moms and dads come home and try to pick up where they left off. … Continue Reading

The Spin Game

By: Vince Yanez

Last Sunday I was excited to see the talking heads concentrate only on the proposed Mosque in New York, as if nothing else was happening in our world. Apparently, when a President shows his support for the Constitution he was sworn to protect, this somehow makes him an enemy to his own country.

So let’s see how each side is doing, just for fun, first the Democrats and their huge failings:

Defending Freedom of Religion makes you an enemy of the state. Defending the right for everyone to be EQUAL, including marriage, makes you an enemy to the sanctity of marriage. Defending the right for a woman to choose makes you an enemy of the unborn. Defending the Constitution saying ‘Born in the U.S.A.’ makes you a law-breaker-lover. Showing respect to another country means you are ‘apologizing’ for America. … Continue Reading

The 2010 Conference of the National Association of Latino Elected Officials just wrapped up last week and Globe’s Mayor, Fernando Shipley, was one of seven new members elected to a three year term on this prestigious 23 person board which includes State Senators, Councilmen, School Board Members, and other leaders at the local, State and National levels.

(This op ed piece launches a new series looking at local and national politics. We invite guest columnists and ask readers to weigh in on their thoughts as we head into the Fall. )

The rhetoric of politics will soon take center stage in our lives as we head into mid-term elections. And the question we ask readers this week is when does rhetoric become reactionary?

Remember the Gangsta rap of the 1990′s which was accused of inciting violence against a host of evils including policemen and women? And planting seeds in young people which lead to bad things for society?

Communities of God-fearing folk and the FCC stepped in and censored some of the most onerous speech. Maybe it’s time we look at the consequences of political rhetoric. … Continue Reading

Beneful gets another Black Eye

Beneful gets another Black Eye

The $500,000 Dog Park Challenge

The news spread rapidly when Purina/Beneful announced a half-million dollar contest for a dream dog park in May. All the lucky winner had to do was to submit a 2 minute video showcasing why they were the most deserving of such largess. The winning entry would get a $500,000 “extreme make over” which would obviously result in one amazing facility for dogs and dog-owners. The contest began in May and this August viewers will vote for the winner.

You won’t find the Globe Park video in this coveted circle. And maybe you will decide after looking at the entries, that we didn’t deserve to be in the final ten. But like the award winning  ALLY BANK commercials which drive home the point about fair play and transparent communication, we found the Beneful contest rife with potholes for contestants trying to play by the rules.

Instead of generating good will and positive branding for the Beneful/Purina name, our experience through this process soured our opinion about the company.  Here’s why.
