The State issues a new RFP for 5000 Prison Beds. Is Globe in the running?

Visitors entrance to the Utah State Prison in ...

The new RFP for more prison beds in Arizona is out and bidders will be expected to turn in their packages by February 24th.  Here in Globe, we don’t know who the bidders are at this point. We don’t know if the Emerald Companies who presented before the Globe City Council and EDC on the first go-round will be among the bidders this time. We don’t know even, if Globe is still considered as a site for contention. But what we do know is enough for continued concern and vigilance by all who want to protect this community from becoming another host for these ill-conceived projects. … Continue Reading

An Open Letter to EDC Board President

Open Letter to Mr. Jerry McCreary, EDC Board President

From: Jim E. Moss, Globe Resident & Business Owner

Dear Mr. McCreary,

During CALL TO THE PUBLIC at the January 10 Globe City Council meeting, and through other public statements, you have raised several questions/issues that deserve a response.

Let me begin by saying that the SGCEDC, which you lead, is obviously comprised of very fine individuals trying to make positive decisions for our community.

Public policy debates can become overheated, and naturally it can be difficult to avoid personality clashes etc. Unquestionably, I have spoken out passionately for our position in this debate. Keep in mind — we the citizens, do not hold the ‘official’ reins of power. Therefore, in order to achieve our goal it has become necessary to build a grassroots coalition. In doing so,the political environment becomes lively, as the status quo is challenged. Democracy in action can get a bit testy — but we have attempted to conduct our entire campaign in a way that we can be proud of. … Continue Reading

Call to the Public: Citizens speak out against Prison

Last week, in a Call to the Public, local residents and business owners once again voiced their strong opposition to what is seemingly a handful of elected leaders intent on bringing a for-profit prison to Globe. (click the headline to see video)  The following video shows former EDC Director Melissa Woodall speaking on behalf of the community in a video produced to convince the DOC that Globe wants a prison. At the time the video was made, almost no one in the community was aware that the EDC and City of Globe was even pursuing this idea. So it’s hard to know just who she is referring to when she says the “community is thrilled.”

A dissapointment. Globe Mayor and 3 council members pass measure of support.

January 26, 2011 Globe City Hall 1 Comment

It was a packed house at Monday nites' Council meeting in which the Mayor and 1/2 the council passed a measure to send DOC Director Charles Ryan a letter of support for a prison. The vast majority of people in the audience that nite were there to protest such an action.

PRESS RELEASE — 1-25-11

From:  Jim Moss, Spokesperson, Citizens Opposed to Becoming a Prison Town

A “silent majority” wants a big private prison in Globe, according to several elected officials.  Sound familiar?  That’s a similar claim Richard M. Nixon made prior to being impeached.

Globe’s Mayor and four Council Members voted down a Citizen’s Resolution calling for leaders to cease their pursuit of a private prison for Globe.  It is no surprise.  At least now we know for certain where they stand.  Mayor Shipley, Vice Mayor Wilshire, and Council Members Uhl, Casillas, &  Alderman decided long ago they wanted a private prison project regardless of what citizens of Globe say.  This group is joined by Supervisors Dawson & Pastor, and EDC President McCreary.  These Officials ‘circled the wagons’ long ago, determined to bring a big For-profit to our town.  … Continue Reading

Fellowship At First Friday

By Laura Stennerson

There is a feeling I get when I have a moment of acute awareness. My breath catches, I tingle, and sometimes I even giggle. Well that is exactly how I felt as I got in my car to leave Vida E Cafe 157 W. Ceder Street, Globe, Az. I had just attended their First Friday Open Mic, and I was a bit jittery from my triple shot latte, which might account for the catchy breath, tingling, and even the giggling. Yet, I knew I was on to a dawning realization of why I so enjoy the open mic events in our community. It is not just those individuals who fearlessly go forward to perform, it not just the delicious coffee and food that I crave, no, it is the fellowship, the camaraderie, it is the love that keeps me coming back. The erasing of imaginary boundaries between young and old, genres, styles, words spoken or sang. On this First Friday, I watched as musicians exchanged ideas, equipment, stories, and a deep appreciation for each others musical endeavors. I watched as family and friends, and musicians and poets not performing came to support the evening’s performers in a delightful attitude of fun. A sense of joy swirled around the room, intermingling with music and the warm reassuring scent of coffee. … Continue Reading

We Hear You America! A Chance for $5million

We Hear You America! A Chance for $5million

By: Linda Gross

We’re in the running! Really.  Globe Arizona, population about 7,000 people is competing against FIFTY other entries from around the country to win the Reader’s Digest  “We Hear You America” contest.  Why, in just the last three weeks, thanks to the blogosphere, facebook and email, we have gone from 7th place to 3rd place with just over just over 10,000 clicks for GLOBE!  Of course, it it alittle embarrassing that Ava, Missouri with a population of just 3,000 is ahead of us with 13,000 clicks, but at the rate we’re going – we might just catch up to AVA! How do we do this!  CLICKS. Go here:”We Hear You America” and click ten times! … Continue Reading

DarinLand: Interview with a Double

December 3, 2010 Globe Az, Opinion 1 Comment

by Darin Lowery

Recently I met with a guy who looks surprisingly like me- so much so, we could be twins- and we had a lil’ chin wag. His name is Darin Lowery and he lives here in Arizona, that “Bastion of the Six C’s” – Copper, Cattle, Cotton, Citrus, Climate and Claypool, though he actually lives in Globe. He took some time out to answer a few questions. … Continue Reading

Good Junk Bakery serving up piping hot cinnamon rolls daily

Good Junk Bakery serving up piping hot cinnamon rolls daily

By: Linda Gross

The name, Good Junk Bakery ,stems from all the other “good junk” businesses Sam Palmer has owned , including a recycling business in Miami and a used furniture store in Globe. He has always been able to turn a profit on offering “Good Junk” for sale. So, he kept the name when he decided to open the Bakery. Nothing pretentious or oversold here. He simply wants to ‘make a living’ as he says, and produce fresh, baked goods to go with his freshly ground coffees. He starts his days at 4:30 am now when the skies are pitch black and not a soul is stirring on Broad Street. By 6:45 am Sam is pulling out piping hot cinnamon buns, and 20minutes later, he is pulling out hot loaves of bread. … Continue Reading

The Copper Spike Excursion Train will be offering meal service in the Dome Car this season, including both a lunch menu and a dinner menu. Yesterday, local residents were treated to a trial run and a free meal before the official launch of Season 3 begins on Thursday.
